The initial meeting (an assessment for either coaching or psychotherapy/counselling) is an opportunity to discuss with the coach/therapist whether a psychotherapeutic intervention (a psychotherapy treatment) or a series of coaching sessions might be appropriate for your difficulty, and to agree with the coach/therapist about the arrangements for further meetings. The Initial Meeting takes about 45 minutes to 60 minutes. All other psychotherapy or coaching sessions are typically 50 minutes. Your coach/therapist will hold you to that time absolutely. If you arrive late, the coach/therapist will still must stop at the agreed time.
Coaching & Psychotherapy first meetings – what to ask
- What are his or her professional credentials? Where did they undertake their training?
- Does this therapist have any experience working with people with your specific issues?
- What intervention methods does this person use (coaching, counseling and psychotherapy are broad umbrella terms – each of the three has different ‘orientations’ which allow a more precise understanding of the method proposed, and the aims and direction of the work).
- How do you arrange payment?
- When and how often do you meet for coaching/psychotherapy sessions?
- In case of emergencies, how can you reach your coach/therapist?
- Any other questions you feel would be important to ask your coach or psychotherapist to help you feel comfortable seeing him or her.
